Discipline 05: Arrival, Rated

First impressions, rated for two tons.

A statement paver driveway on a load-bearing base: plow-proof, frost-proof, and unlike any asphalt on the street.

The discipline

The largest surface you own shouldn’t be the dullest.

Your driveway is the biggest hardscape on the property and the frame around the whole house, and most of them are a sheet of asphalt doing nothing for either. A paver driveway turns that square footage into architecture: pattern, border, apron, all of it working for the house.

Structurally, it is a different animal from a patio, and we build it like one: a deeper vehicular-rated base compacted in lifts, engineered pitch, and interlocking pavers that shrug off plows and frost. Years on, if a utility cut or a stain ever demands it, individual stones lift and reset invisibly. Try that with asphalt.
